Apple Rabbit Compost

AMS. FROM THE JAX FEDERAL CREDIT UNION STUDIO AT UNITY PLAZA, THIS IS RIVER CITY LIVE.>>>WELCOME BACK. MANY OF US ARE DOING WHATEVER WE CAN TO HELP OUT THE ENVIRONMENT. A LOCAL COMPANY IS TAKING TRASH AND TURNING IT INTO GREEN FUTURE TREASURE. LET’S TAKE A LOOK.>>HEY, RIVER CITY FAMILY. THANKS FOR JOINING ME AS WE RIDE ALONG AND SEE WHAT IT’S LIKE COLLECTING ORGANIC WASTE.>>REPORTER: HOW DID YOU GET INTO THIS?>>I WAS MANAGING A RESTAURANT OVER IN FIVE POINTS. AND I WAS WATCHING FOOD GET THROWN AWAY CONSTANTLY. I JUST DISCOVERED MY OWN GROWN THUMB AND I STARTED COLLECTING SOME OF THE FOOD WASTE TO BRING HOME. AND COUPLE WEEKS TIME, AND I HAD IT COMPLETELY FILLED UP. AND SO I COULD NOT — COLLECT ENOUGH AND PROCESS ENOUGH SO — I’M THE FIRST. YEAH. EXCITING. SO — A LOT OF COFFEE GROUNDS. AND PLANTS. THEY’LL PUT IN THINGS LIKE THEIR POTATO PEELING. A LOT OF EGG SHELLS. AND I ALSO ENCOURAGE PEOPLE TO TOSS IN LIGHTLY SOILED PAPER TOWELS, PAPER TOWEL ROLL AND TOILET PAPER ROLL. JUST BECAUSE WE DO NEED A LOT OF CARBON MATERIAL TOO. BECAUSE WHEN WE’RE SENDING OUR YARD WASTE TO THE LANDFILL, IT’S NOT DECOMPOSING PROPERLY. IT’S LACKING THE OXYGEN AND AIR NEEDED FOR IT TO DECOMPOSE. SO IT RESULTS IN NITROGEN GASES. AND GLOBAL WARMING. THEN IT TAKES UP SPACE. THAT WE COULD USE FOR THINGS THAT SHOULD BE LANDFILL. .>>HOW WOULD YOU EXPLAIN THE BENEFIT?>>SO WHEN WE’RE SENDING FOOD WASTE TO A LANDFILL WHICH 40% OF THE U.S. FOOD SUPPLY IS WASTE AND 90% OF THAT GOES TO A LANDFILL. SO WE’RE NOT JUST TOSSING FOOD. WE’RE TOSSING AND WASTING ALL THE LABOR ASSOCIATED WITH IT, ALL THE ENERGY USAGE, ALL THE LABOR COSTS, ALL THAT TOO. FOOD WASTE IS COSTING US $165 BILLION A YEAR.>>REPORTER: WHEN YOU GUYS GO TO THE FARM AND TURN IT INTO COMPOST, HOW DOES THAT BENEFIT?>>BY TURNING IT INTO COMPOST WE’RE CREATING THE SOIL AND THE — OTHERWISE WE WOULDN’T HAVE. SO WHEN WE GO OUT TO THE FARM, WE GO OUT THERE EVERY OTHER DAY. AND SO WHEN WE’RE DOING THAT WE’RE ABLE TO SPEED UP THE PROCESS A LOT MORE AND INCORPORATE MORE OPTIONS INTO IT. AND TURN IT INTO SOMETHING GOOD THAT WE THEN GIVE BACK TO OUR CUSTOMER WE’RE PUTTING IT BACK INTO THE SOIL.>>REPORTER: LOOKS LIKE MY BABY GREEN NEEDS TO GROW EXPONENTIALLY TO GET THERE. I’M RANCE ADAMS WITH RIVER CITY LIVE.>>REPORTER: IT’S A RELATIVELY SMALL COMPANY. THEY’RE NOT LOOKING TO BE A MAJOR COMPANY BUT THEY ARE
