Bundelkhand Diaries: Alternative Farming “Avartanasheel Kheti”

Avartanasheel Kheti is that kind of farming where every peasant has to plant trees and plants in one third of his farmland He has to produce fruits and wood. The next one third should be used for cattle farming the kind of cattle that the agro-climatic zone demands.. And the third,.. All the kind of agricultural farming that is possible in that agro-climatic zone should be grown Farming must not be done keeping the market in mind Farming produce should be for own consumption Whatever remains of consumption of the produce is not to be taken to the markets It must be processed Value addition has to be done to it Durability of the produce must be increased It squality has to be improved And after that it has to be taken to the market The outcome of this will be we farmers will be the owners of our produce Before this, we cannot be the owners of the produce but the market is We have to do both the things- Grow plants that use less water… We must grow crops that are more drought resistant and extreme weather resistant And the crops that are beneficial to he ecology of the area should be grown And the significant thing here is, the lack of carbon in the soils today It has been substantially and constantly reducing Avartanasheel Kheti can have a major contribution in regaining the lost carbon from the soil Three four benefits out of this kind of farming automatically reaches the farmers The environment and the ecological balance of the area is maintained It ensures good food for the farmers… food that is nutritious and healthy Productivity increases by about 10-15% And last but not the least, farmer’s prosperity is ensured Every farmer is prosperous Prosperity here would basically mean that the farmer is producing all his needs at his own farm There is no dependency for any commodity If we leave some area for cows to graze in an acre of land, Manure from cowdung (Gobar) comes for free And these four cows will produce atleast 4000 litres of milk in one lactation period And the value of 4000 litres of milk as you know is far more than the value of 15 quintals of wheat So in this way, livestock breeding and tree planting and the crops of our requirement for consumption All these factors signify the importance of ‘Avartanasheel Kheti’ Climate change is here and now. But i do not call it climate change I say it is climate chaos. Its an imbalance I do not know much English but its an imbalance, imbalance of… energy, water and rains It is an imbalance of minerals and metals found on the earth because of mindless and capitalist extraction As a result of all these imbalances, Untimely rains, Scarce rains or excess rains hailstorms or other natural calamities are the outcomes This kind of farming will not be affected even there is a drought of 40 years. because drought affects the crops, and not fruit trees Drought manages to affect those crops which are not natural to the region Now only if the farmers in this region would have grown Jowar, Arhar and Moong; and not Til (sesame) If we do not motivate our farmers to go for ‘Avartanasheel Kheti’ then we can never maintain the ecological balance because the farmer only has control over agriculture And 80% land of the earth is with the farmers. The whole earth, including animals and birds, trees and plants, and humans and minerals have a definite balance and in a particular proportion If we acknowledge and recognize this fact in our lives and imbibe this idea in our farming, and in all our activites, It will remain eternal and balanced It has always been.
