First Farm to Broadcast Fertilizer – RoGator 1300

hey everybody its Ryan and Andrew we
are on at my place right now and well Andrew what are you doing
We’re spreading fertilizer. why? because crops need it
exactly all right so the roGator is somewhere behind us and you want to tell
us just a little bit about what you’re using and what we’re putting down today
yeah so we’re putting on a blend of potash diammonium phosphate and ammonium
sulfate so AMS tap and potash we’re going on this particular farm we’re
going about 100 pounds of each and we’re looking at basically a little bit of
replacement value and build and try to be economical with it cool if we you
know we I take a lot of soil to us we’ve taken some tests at this farm and we
have kind of evaluated what’s going to be the best practice to get the best
yield the best price and so that’s numbers we came up with for here this
year doing a couple different programs here and there but we’re starting off
with this as a foundation approach and then we’re gonna take some tissue tests
this year and watch our fertility inside the tissues of the plants and make some
decisions going forward sounds good so what are some of the advantages of
broadcasting over air flowing or air flowing over broadcasting biggest thing
we looked at is cost yep and then there’s placement so placements always
important but with nitrogen nitrogen doesn’t typically always spin the same
way that potash and DAP is so I feel like I can get a very accurate spread
pattern with that potash and AMS with a spinner spreader when we’re starting to
do either high rates of fertilizer or trying to place nitrogen down at higher
quantities I want that airflow boom because you have a little bit more
control of how that product drops in that pattern so right now we’re running
an 80 foot spread pattern we’ve pan tested this and calibrated it so that we
know across all 80 foot you’re getting an even distribution of all three
products if we were trying to do this with
nitrogen right now we might not be able to see the same results especially if
we’re trying to run two to three hundred pounds of a urea type product in with
this mix I I wouldn’t tell you I could guarantee it’s going to be even not
saying it can’t ever be even but it’s a lot harder to get it accurate and that’s
why I typically go with the airflow the kind of technologies are using so that’s
a rotator 1300 with the g4 box we’ve got a viper four in there and then he also
has an iPad that he’s taking a look at boundaries and his location the field
make sure we’re spreading the right strips all right sounds good
and with that let’s get the broadcasting fertilizer or 18% more tonnage with a 13-foot
cutter bar over a ten-foot cutter bar mostly because of how often you’re
running across the field so with if you’re running a ten-foot cutter bar and
you’re raking it and then you’re chopping it we’re bailing it you run
over that field with tire tracks 100 you run over one hundred forty-seven percent
of that field so you’re basically covering every inch
of that field with tire tracks plus doing a like one and a half times
basically yeah so every time you run across the field you’re constantly what
you’re saying is bigger is better that’s what he said but I was really surprised
I’m a 13 foot snot big yeah but he said the number one size cutter bar in
Wisconsin is a tough what cutter bar we got alone half I mean that’s just what
grandpa bought back line and it was stupid cheap on the auction sale we
never thought we’d actually buy it back it’s just it was dirt cheap say we
couldn’t let it go I was shocked just from a tonne foot so 13 could be that
much of a difference in wheel traffic across the field I believe that I mean
it was three more feet that you’re taking was one pass it’s 33%
more coverage so yeah what do they say as far as one’s the optimal time to be
cutting physics 28 days I know the 28 days part but as far as starting 14th of
May comes to May 18th really don’t make it really easy for us yeah
farmer’s day no be planting so you talked a lot about the low lignin
alfalfa’s that are out there and he said in this part of the world the low lignin
alfalfa’s really don’t reduce the cutting you know he said we’re still on
a for cutting system but you said you were stretching out the amount of
daylight because we’re moving our cutting from 28 days to about 32 to 34
days and so instead of the last cutting being
September 5th between the 1st and 5th our last cutting now ends up being
closer to September 15th by going with a low lignin and a larger stretch of time
between cuttings and Grandpa Lee’s told us growing up that’s September 15th is
when you should be done cut in a way you’re giving it enough time to grow
back before that first potential frost that’s a better chance of surviving over
the winter right yeah and that’s what they’re still saying you know if you’re
on the regular 28-day cutting it’s really that first week of September but
you don’t want to go past the 50 crap max just finished broadcasting
fertilizer on the main farms and now they’re headed out to start broadcasting
on some of Travis’s acres and my own they probably won’t be able to finish
tonight but Andrew hopes that whatever they can’t get done tonight they’re
gonna be able to get done tomorrow provided that it doesn’t rain many of
you may have heard about the tragic flooding that’s been taking place out in
Iowa and Nebraska these past few weeks as such
dad Travis and I have decided to each donate two hundred and fifty dollars to

  1. Why do they take tissue samples to see what nutrients the plant has in it cause of the fertiliser you just spread or what

  2. When you spread manure doesn't that throw off the soil samples and the fertilizer that Andrew is spreading?
    It did seem that you was spreading on corn and Andrew was spreading on beans.
    I am not a farmer just a little confused….lol… love the channel and what you guys do. Keep up the good work.

Wanna be farmer here so forgive any silly questions… that RoGater able to have different configurations outside of from the factory? aka. can you use a liquid spreader and remove the solid spreader or is it set from factory to that configuration? never seen a high riding solid spreader before.

  4. Spreading fertilizer and cow manure huh? That's cool. With the fertilizer being spread, how can you tell the difference between which with crop yields? Will that be when harvest time comes or during the growing season? I heard about the flooding in Iowa and Nebraska from this YouTube channel and the millennial farmer in Minnesota. Nothing on the mainstream media. Sorry to hear about that. I hope the water goes down so those people can put their lives back on track.

  6. I noticed in this video the bobcat had a manure fork attachment instead of the bucket like in the previous video. What is the difference between the two, in terms of using them for manure.

  7. My dad and our family and 14 other people went to help flooding in Nebraska.. 4 pick ups and a 53ft semi trailer all full. Anything from baby stuff up to milk replaser and mineral blocks. My dad and uncle donated 20 mineral blocks.
