Many people buy organic food hoping to feel
healthier, and potentially have a positive impact on the environment. But are organic
foods even better for you and the environment in the first place? For plants, the term organic basically means
something grown without the use of synthetic fertilizers or pesticides, but this is a little
bit misleading. You see, many consumers buy organic to avoid pesticides all together,
but the truth is, organic farmers can still use pesticides and fungicides to prevent insects
from destroying their crops, they just can’t be synthetically made. There are over 20 chemicals
approved for organic use in the US derived from natural sources like plants, but studies
have shown that some natural pesticides are actually a more serious health and environmental
risk than man-made ones. Not to say they are all bad, but simply that, ‘natural’ doesn’t
always mean better for you or the environment. On top of this, not all organic foods are
completely organic. If a label simply says ‘organic’ it only has to contain 95% organic
ingredients. The label “made with organic ingredients” on items like bread may only
contain 70%, while “containing organic ingredients” may only have 50%. Only when a label says
“100% Organic” does it contain purely organic ingredients. For what it’s worth,
the term “free range” also only requires evidence of access to the outdoors for a minimum
of 5 minutes per day. Huh! Interestingly, a meta-analysis conducted in
2012 found that organic crop yields are 25% lower on average than conventional ones, though
differences vary greatly between types of crops. For example, organic vegetable yields
are typically 33% lower than conventional ones, putting a greater strain on the natural
environment as more farmland is required. However, organic legume yields are only 5%
lower, as they are more efficient at absorbing nitrogen from organic fertilizers. Of course,
many organic farming practices like crop rotations and mixed planting as opposed to using mono-cultures
are better for the soil and the environment. But are they better for you? After analyzing
237 studies, researchers concluded that organic fruit and veggies are no more nutritious than
conventionally grown food. However, long-term studies of purely-organic diets are difficult,
as most people eat a mixture of foods with non-organic ingredients. Those on short-term organic diets do show
higher levels of carotenoids, polyphenols, Vitamin C and E, LDL cholesterol, antioxidant
activity, immune system markers, and ever higher semen quality. But, the differences
are clinically insignificant. Children placed on organic diets for ten days have lower levels
of organophosphates in their urine, which in higher concentrations are associated with
neurological problems, but both levels are orders of magnitude lower than the amount
needed to cause clinical harm. And just because something is organic, doesn’t make it better.
An bag of organic chips, for example, is still just deep fried carbohydrates with very little
nutritional value. Most surprising is that organic food has a
higher incidence of being dangerous. Though organic foods accounts for only 1% of agricultural
acreage or space, they account for 7% of recalled food units in 2015. For example, this year
several flavours of Clif Bars were recalled from stores due to organic sunflower kernels
that were potentially contaminated with listeria – a bacterium which kills hundreds in the
US each year. Another study found E.coli in 10% of organic produce, compared to 2% in
conventional ones. The truth is, eating organic foods can be
good for you, and in some ways be better for the environment, but it’s not the be all
and end all. Production methods vary greatly for both organic and conventional foods, from
one farm to another – or from local farms to factory farms – and it’s likely a combination
of methods that will lead to the greatest results for your health and the environment.
Organic and conventional foods can co-exist and don’t have to be at odds with one another
– anyone who tells you with 100% certainty one way is fully better than the other is
ignoring the science. When it comes to your own health, it’s really
a combination of diet, exercise, various other lifestyle choices, and of course, your genetics!

  1. This video is misleading. You are really cherrypicking here, and failing to mention the other side of the story. Many chemicals used in foods are known to have negative long term affects and some are quite dangerous. And no shit organic crop yields are lower, although that doesn't have anything to do with how healthy they are for you. I would say That synthetic chemicals are putting more strain on the environment than the increased space you need to grow them. And of course organic food isn't going to have more nutrients in it, the whole point is that eating organic food isn't going to slowly poison you.

    What monitoring for "long term effects" is done on organic foods? Heirloom foods? Conventional farming products? A new variety or hybrid developed in someone's truck garden? THEY PUT IT ON THE SHELVES AND START SELLING IT IMMEDIATELY!!!! The safety testing is whether or not someone dies during the first week of marketing. Compare that to GMOs which are 100% tested before submittal to the FDA for approval. Now which category of foods is more risky?

  17. I’m starting to think a lot of people have forgotten what organic really means: “relating to or denoting compounds containing carbon (other than simple binary compounds and salts) and chiefly or ultimately of BIOLOGICAL ORIGIN.”

    So when I saw the title, I immediately thought, “Isn’t that all food?!?”

    For real though people, if you’re that concerned about pesticides & other chemicals, start a garden if you can. Raise chickens in your backyard. Do what you can, because even though a company says it’s “organic” *cough pesticide/herbicide free cough*, it doesn’t meant it’s true.

    Also, you know what else is organic? Hemlock.

  18. I think you should try a home-grown tomato against one you get at a restaurant. I ate one yesterday on a hot dog. It tasted like packaging peanuts. It was hard, dry, pale and yucky. Home grown have real flavor and are dark red. They're juicy with a lot of depth to their taste.

    If dogs are so stupid, why won't even my "starving labs" refuse store bought tomatoes?? They LOVE home grown. And they grow in Northern climates well.

    How do you know the differences are "clinically insignificant?" You were able to measure them, were you not? I'm guessing it doesn't take much modification of the body to screw you up badly.

    Here's an example: take a piano file generated on a computer. Have a real person play on a real piano.

    It's obvious immediately which is the person. The computer generated file, frankly, sucks.

    If you're not eating junk at all, you'll eat probably 75% less food overall.

    Measure it for yourself.

The longest we live to be is 100 years anyway and that's not a long time. Just live a balance life and enjoy it while it last because it will end soon.   24. “Free range” only req 5 mins outdoors – and that’s another reason why the whole animal agriculture is a sham to the point of being a crime – animals are sentient beings and shouldn’t be murdered, enslaved, raped or eaten, not to mention the health risks eating corpse pieces and animal periods (eggs), secretions (dairy milk with puss and blood in it, something else they don’t tell you!) and products derived from those (cheese).   27. Biosolids. That reason should be enough for anyone. Thousands of full condoms swimming arround with feces and period blood and they don't filter the semen because it's part of what makes the plants grow. Biosolids caused cattle to die from eating grass treated with it and it soaks into the food and traces are found on the surface of food which is worse than the chef at the restaurant you eat at rubbing his ejaculate and feces in your burger.

    They downplay and ignore biosolids everywhere like GMOs is the problem. That should tell you you trust them. Biosolids is so sick and abundant in food it should be headlining news everywhere, but it's intentionally overlooked. Here’s the real reason you should eat organic and it may save your or your families life… Fruit and veg contain a phytonutrient called Salvestrols which fight against fungi and naturally stop them from going off. Diseased cells in the human body have a unique enzyme protein called CYP1B1, typically found in cancer. Salvestrols will have a deadly on this enzyme protein whilst leaving the healthy cells fine.

    Unfortunately due to fungicides that are sprayed onto normal crops, the majority of Salvestrols (which are found on the skin of fruit and veg) are destroyed, also taking with them that fungi/disease fighting defence with them. Organic fruit and veg has many more Salvestrols, giving you that extra disease fighting ability.

    In India farmers burn their sugarcane fields after harvest. Is it necessary? Why do they do it?
