A pleasant day to you and welcome to my Channel The Late Grower The topic for this video is How to make your own organic liquid fertilizer. Let’s start with what we need….first is compost if there is no compost you can also use vermicast, or vermicompost. Next we need a bag to hold the compost examples are worn-out socks, used stockings, or eco-bag such as this one. Put compost in the bag ( in this case sock) I’m using a funnel made from this pet bottle to help ease the transfer. After putting some compost in this sock, next thing to do is put it in approximately one gallon of water. Leave it for a few hours stirring every now and then to allow compost to leech into the water. You can also squeeze the sock to make it faster. Like so… As you can see the water is now changing its color. This shows that compost juices are coming out and both macro and micro nutrients are getting mixed in the water. Leave it for one or two hours and afterwards it can be applied to plants. it is advised to stir the mix every now and then for the bubbles to come out and help in aeration. Stirring will help in getting some oxygen in the water. For one gallon of water you can use about 1/4 kilo of compost or vermicast. For a bucket that is around 16 liters capacity, you can use around one kilo of compost. If you have lots of plants in the garden, you can also do it in a big bucket. This is called compost tea. If you used vermicast, then it is called worm tea. After about an hour or two, this liquid fertilizer can already be applied to plants. There are other approaches to making compost tea… there are those who use a bubbler..the kind that they use in aquariums. to create bubbles It is called brewing and they do it for 24 hours before applying the tea to plants. There are also those who ferment this tea .. they add molasses and other ingredients and ferment the mix for about one month. Afterwards they transfer to bottle the solution (others are selling it as an organic fertilizer) In my case I just make this mix and after one or two hours, apply it to plants. As to the question of why not just directly apply compost to plants The reason is that buying compost or vermicast can be expensive This is especially true if you have many plants in the garden. Making compost tea helps us save on cost This 1/4 compost can be applied only to one plant But because we used it to make compost tea, we can apply it to four or five plants. That is one reason why compost tea is made. To save on the costs of buying compost. Another question is: Is compost tea effective to plants? There were studies made in the past that says it is effective because most of the composts’ macro and micro nutrients mixes with water. Another question is: Can we do this only once for this compost? This can actually be done two or three times. After using it the first time, I will put this compost in a basin and place it in a shaded area, no direct sunlight. Others use it three times. The first dip is considered the most nutritious to plants For the second dip, it is better to use only about two gallons of water or half of the water volume from the first dip. In case of a third dip, it is better to use only one gallon of water. After using two or three times, the used compost should be mixed around the top soil of any plant in the garden. So the plants can still benefit from whatever nutrients left in this compost. This is the benefit of making compost tea… You can use a small amount of compost to fertilize many of your plants. Because it is pure organic, you can apply this tea without any danger of burning the roots of plants. This can also be used as foliar spray Just put it in a spray bottle and this liquid fertilizer can be sprayed to plants especially where the stomata is located. Plants also absorb nutrients thru foliar so this tea is ideal to apply via spray. Compost tea can be used to water or spray seedlings, vegetative stage, It can also be sprayed during the flowering stage. When it comes to the fruiting stage, it is better not to spray two weeks before harvest. Although it is organic, we might still get microbes/bacteria on the fruits if it is sprayed very near harvest time. So this is one method on how to make organic liquid fertilizer.
