Toxic Levels Of Lead In Soil Of East Chicago, Indiana

FLINT, MICHIGAN WAS THE MECCA OF
PLAID ñ OF BAD DRINKING WATER AFTER IT WAS DISCOVERED THAT
INDIVIDUALS LIVING IN A COMMUNITY WERE DRINKING LED. IT TURNS OUT THAT THE DRINKING
WATER IS A HUGE PROBLEM IN OTHER MUNICIPALITIES THROUGHOUT
THE COUNTRY. CHICAGO, INDIANA IS NO
EXCEPTION. THERE ARE REPORTS THAT PEOPLE
LIVING IN PUBLIC HOUSING IN THAT AREA HAD TO DEAL WITH EXTREME
LEVELS OF LEAD IN THEIR SOIL, AND IT WASN’T UNTIL
RECENTLY THAT THE EPA DECIDED TO DO SOMETHING ABOUT
IT. THANKFULLY WE HAVE OUR OWN FIELD
REPORTER JORDAN CHARITON COMING TO THE COMMUNITY AND
SPEAKING TO THE INDIVIDUALS THEY ARE ABOUT WHAT THEY’D
EXPERIENCED. THIS NEIGHBORHOOD WAS BUILT IN
72, 44 YEARS AGO, AND IT WAS KNOWN TO BE BUILT ON A LEAD
SWELTERING PLANT. THEY KNEW THERE WOULD BE ISSUES
HERE. WHY THEY HAVE PRIORITIZE TESTING
THE COMMUNITY FOR DECADES LATER IS A HUGE ISSUE. WHAT’S NORMAL IN THIS ISSUE IS
ABOUT 22 PPM. WHAT TRIGGERS A CLEANUP IS 400
PPM WITH THE EPA. WE’RE SEEING AS HIGH AS 91,000
PPM. THEY HAVEN’T SEEN LEVELS THAT I
ANYWHERE IN THE COUNTRY. I GOT A CALL INDICATING THAT THE
RESIDENCE HERE GOT LETTERS FROM THE MAYOR SAYING THAT THEY’VE
GOT ANYWHERE BETWEEN 30 AND 90 DAYS TO VACATE THE PREMISES
BECAUSE OF THE DANGER OF THE LEAD AND THE ARSENIC WITHIN THE
DIRT AREA OF THE PROPERTY, AND THEY HAD TO MOVE. EPA RIGHT NOW IS DESIGNING A
PLAN HOW TO GO INTO SOMEBODY ñ INTO SOMEBODY’S HOME AND CLEAN. FURNITURE, COUNTERTOP, TELL YOU
IF YOU NEED TO THROW THESE CLOTHES OUT, THIS COUCH OUT,
THAT KIND OF THING. THIS IS REALLY CATASTROPHIC. WE HAD NO IDEA WHAT WE WERE
LIVING IN. I’VE BEEN OUT HERE SINCE 2004
AND I HAD NO IDEA THAT THE LEAD WAS AS BAD AS IT WAS IN OUR
UNITS, AND IN OUR HOME AS WELL. I HAD A SURGERY IN 2005, WHICH
LED TO ME BEING DIAGNOSED IN 2006 BECAUSE I WASN’T GETTING
ANY BETTER. I HAD A COMPLETE HYSTERECTOMY AT
THE AGE OF 29. BEFORE YOU MOVED HERE, I’M
TRYING TO UNDERSTAND, WERE YOU HAVING ANY HEALTH ISSUES? I NEVER WAS SICK A DAY IN MY
LIFE UNTIL I MOVED OUT THERE. HYSTERECTOMY AT THE AGE OF 29,
THAT’S CRAZY. IT’S NOT JUST ANECDOTAL, THEY
ARE TESTING THE SOIL, AND THE TEST ñ THE SOIL IS COMING UP INCREDIBLY
TOXIC AS THAT GUY EXPLAINED. LEAD IS SUPER DANGEROUS. THERE’S A THEORY OUT THERE THAT
THE LEAD IN THE AIR IS WHAT CAUSED CRIME TO SPIKE IN THE
1970S, AND IT USED TO NOT JUST BE IN THE PAINT, WHICH IT WAS,
BUT ALSO IT WOULD COME OUT OF THE CARS. IT’S NOT A THEORY THAT LEAD IS
VERY DANGEROUS, THAT’S A FACT. THE THEORY IS THAT IT WAS SO
DANGEROUS THAT INCREASED LEVELS OF LEAD IN THE AIR LED TO
INCREASED VIOLENCE THROUGHOUT THE COUNTRY FOR AN
EXTENDED PERIOD OF TIME. AND ONCE WE LITERALLY GOT THE
LEAD OUT, AND REDUCED TO THE LEVEL OF LEAD IN THE
CARS IN THE PAINT, ETC., THEN CRIME STARTED TO DROP. AGAIN, THAT COULD BE MANY
FACTORS IN THAT SITUATION, BUT EVERYBODY ACKNOWLEDGES THAT
LEAD IS VERY DANGEROUS. WHEN YOU BUILD ON TOP OF FORMER
LEAD SMELTER IMPLANTS, OF COURSE YOU’RE GOING TO HAVE AN ISSUE. OF COURSE YOU SHOULD BE CAREFUL,
REALLY REALLY CAREFUL. THAT’S A REALLY DANGEROUS PLACE
TO BUILD ON TOP OF. I KNOW, IT’S INSANE. 1ST I WANT TO SAY BEFORE A
COMMENT MORE ON THIS STORY, THAT VIDEO WAS JUST A SNIPPET OF
THE WORK THAT JORDAN DID, AND I WANT YOU CHECK OUT THE
FULL VIDEO, IT’S ABOUT SIX MINUTES LONG, ON OUR TYT
POLITICS PAGE. IT’S THE FIRST OF A SIX PART
SERIES. IN THE SECOND PART OF THE VIDEO
YOU ARE GOING TO HEAR FROM STATE SENATOR LONNIE RANDOLPH,
DISCUSS HIS COMMUNICATIONS WITH THE OFFICE OF GOVERNOR MIKE
PENCE. AND ALSO INTERVIEWED BRAD
BENNING, THE ON-SITE COORDINATOR OF THE EPA AT REGION FIVE, SO WE
TALKED TO A LOT OF HIGH-LEVEL OFFICIALS THAT HAVE A LOT OF
GOOD INSIGHT ON THIS STORY. AGAIN, I DON’T WANT YOU GUYS TO
THINK THIS IS AN ISOLATED CASE, WE’RE OBVIOUSLY HAVING
PROBLEMS WITH LEAD ACROSS THE COUNTRY AND PROBLEMS WITH
CONTAMINATED DRINKING WATER, AND AS YOU CAN SEE IN
THAT VIDEO ALONE, IT DISPROPORTIONATELY IMPACTS
CERTAIN GROUPS OF PEOPLE. BY THE WAY CENK, TO YOUR POINT
OF HOW WE KNOW LEAD IS DANGEROUS, THINK PROCESS ñ THINK
PROGRESS DID A REALLY GOOD PIECE ON THIS WHERE THEY SAID THAT IF
EXPOSED TO LEAD AT A YOUNG AGE, CHILDREN CAN BE LEFT
WITH SEVERE BRAIN DAMAGE, LEADING TO MENTAL DISORDERS,
SEIZURES AND BEHAVIORAL DISORDERS, AND STUNTED GROWTH. THIS IS PART OF HOW POOR PEOPLE
GET STUCK IN A VICIOUS CYCLE. THEY ARE NOT TYPICALLY HOLDING
BEVERLY HILLS ON TOP OF OLD LEAD PROCESSING PLANTS. THE PORTABLE GET PUT THERE, THEY
DEVELOPMENTAL ISSUES, AND YOU SAY LOOK AT THAT, AND THAT’S
BECAUSE YOU BUILT THEIR HOUSE ON TOXIC MATERIALS! OBVIOUSLY
THERE’S MANY DISADVANTAGES THE POOR AND UP HAVING IN THE
COUNTRY, BUT HERE IS AT LEAST A PROBLEM THAT WE CAN IDENTIFY,
AND I’M HOPING THAT WE CAN FIX. PART OF FIXING IT INCLUDES
PUTTING A SPOTLIGHT ON IT. SO A TON OF NEWS, AS THEY SHOULD
BE, ABOUT FLINT MICHIGAN, BUT NOT ENOUGH NEWS ABOUT WHAT
IS HAPPENING HERE IN INDIANA. AND AS ANA POINTED OUT, GOVERNOR
OF INDIANA, IT’S NOT LIKE IT’S AN IRRELEVANT PERSON, IT’S MIKE
PENCE, RUNNING FOR VICE PRESIDENT. IF YOU PUT PRESSURE ON HIM AT A
MOMENT LIKE THIS, HE MIGHT ACTUALLY BE MOTIVATED TO DO SO
ABOUT THIS.

  1. I don't know what's sadder, the fact that you kept the pipes for so long,or the fact of how hard you have to try to get them to stop poisoning you.

  2. we had lead in gasoline from 1937 to 1973. Lead most affects children in utero, who was born during this period of time? O right baby boomers. One of the main affects of lead is a lack of EMPATHY (this is for children exposed in utero no people who are already alive) This is why Baby boomers and Older Gen Xers are SUCH ASSHOLES. Its literally not their fault. And you can google all this shit. "lead headed baby boomers" for google a great book about it is called "the lead lined bra: an age of greed"

  3. The top 1% do not drink the same water as the bottom 99%, obviously. That way they can increasingly poison the bottom 99% by diverting funds to corporate shills & sabotage positive & constructive solutions to real problems.

  4. Is it a coincidence that these things happen in the poor neighborhood/concentration camp that they funnel black and other poor people too? You NEVER hear an affluent non black neighborhood get this shit. If there is, I'd like to see the evidence!

  5. I don't think people should be allowed to just put their lead alongside of people anymore.  It probably should be a crime.  But that is something for lawmakers to tackle.  Demand an environment free of human caused lead toxicity as your birthright. Or is such a demand  just too radical a thought? Maybe you should be quiet and just hope for the best. Another thing we can start doing is making those who produce the waste store it at their own homes away from people who don't want the stuff.  Somewhere in here is a good idea.

  6. It is things like this that people miss when they look at the overall lives, and health, of lower income communities. When you've been [literally] pumped full of lead, you're not going to be at optimal health. Thus children at your schools will suffer, the health care system will be full of people from THAT community suffering from multiple conditions they may not know what from, add that to the fact that many cannot afford sufficient health care, they wont be able to attain and retain jobs for consistent income, crime increases, POLICE ENFORCEMENT becomes worse. This is just one way of how you destroy an entire community of people.

People miss out on how HOLISTICALLY this effects people when they start pointing at black, brown, and poor people and keep blaming them for the lives they are living while ignoring the shitty hands they've been dealt.

  7. Where I live 80,000 people are drinking polluted water fountain, security and widefield Colorado. The worst thing is no one came seem to get information on all PFC's in the water. I rent my water is included, I am now spending $150.00 to $200.00 dollars for bottled water a month. My family can't wash dish in the contaminated, so we have to use water we buy. Another thing people don't think about is we have to buy water to cook with as well. The utility company wants to keep charging people. The cities and ulility companies have known for years did nothing about it until a few months ago.

  9. This was done in Ruston, Tacoma, WA. an entire community was built on an old smelting plant. this was done like 3y years ago and it's just getting bigger. ugh.

  10. I know I'm being picky, but I'm kind of a science buff… And Cenk's misuse of the term "theory" is frustrating me 😛

  11. I wonder what people in the developing nations think when they hear that you can't rely on tap water in America to be safe. Use a filter, America! That's just crazy, but I wouldn't go without one.

  12. Thanks guys… Topic matter for Monday's Healthy Matters: The Radio show on the Melanin and Power Radio network. 8 pm CST. 😉
    You guys ROCK!!!

  13. Chicago and flint have been ruled by democrats for decades. its funny how tyt and other liberal outlets refuse to blame the people directly in control of these areas for the mess their citizens live in.

  14. This isn't new news. A lot of this pollution is fallout from industrial dumping from decades ago that just doesn't go away. It's also not unique to Chicago – pretty much any city that was industrialized in the 50's and 60's has places like this.

  15. While emergency response data collection has ended, monitored air, water, sediment, and waste generated by the oil spill cleanup operations, the heavy metals being sprayed from corporate and military jets pulls the oil dispersant to the ground, this will cause erectile dysfunction, crop loss, water contaminations, population controls. All special interests of Bayer who now owns Monsanto. Lead poison brain and Viagra.

  16. Please inform the audio tech team, they gaffed on the audio/video sync on the interview segment. Still love the show #LoserDonald

  17. Give Israel 3 or 4 billion in aid and America Government can't help it's own citizens being poisoned from polluted drinking water…..😲😟😰😞…. (America doesn't care own citizen…. unless they are super rich people)

  18. 91,000 ppm Lead in the soil?? Wow. That means 9.1% of the soil over there is lead. You can probably dig into the ground with your fist, pull it up, and see the lead chunks in it.

  19. Interesting. Back in my contract engineer days, I did some work for a number of manufacturers in East Chicago. It was a major industrial town going way back. I can't say I'm surprised by this.

  20. But TYT aren't journalists!!!!!! Oh look, actual journalism on topics the mainstream media won't address. Hodor.

  21. It’s only the tip of the iceberg.  Now they’re not building Beverly Hills on top of lead smelter dumps, but their building them on top of old NRA hunting grounds where hunters shot billions of bullets out into the environment, rivers lakes and streams.  And if you think you live on the land that was never hunting soil, don’t worry because birds eat those bullets and fly to your neighborhoods to die in your backyard.  That’s where the lead enters the soil where you live.  Them bullets are like a slow dissolving pill.  It takes about five hundred years to dissolve and those bullets shot during the Civil War are just starting to ripen into poison.

  22. IN all of theses situations there were many flags and warnings way before the incidents started occuring, but saving money was more important than human lives and well-being. These stain's placed upon humanity are inexcuseable and those responsbile should be dragged out to the streets and shot , while being recorded.

  23. I've lived and worked in East Chicago. I know that the metals industries around Northwest Indiana have lots of waste. I've seen waste water that is off limits to the public. I know that East Chicago BP plant has had water treatment failures on a fairly regular basis. This entire area is 20-30 miles from the center of Chicago. The Feds and the States need to have very regular testing of water that is close to the locations where people are using the water. It is very inadequate to measure only the water coming from Lake Michigan after it is treated. Lots of hazardous waste sites are located in this area. Nobody wants to talk about this because the amounts of money to clean it up is going for tax deductions for the very rich, tax abatements for industries to stay in the area, and money to barely keep the area from becoming an environmental and economic disaster area. Thank you Mike Pence for being so calloused to the needs of the people in Northwest Indiana. Pence is a horrible leader.

  24. There were literally jokes about how "crazier" the kids and young adults were in areas of high industry. You could smell the difference – that is reality.

  25. Of course the land that these poor people live on is poisoned. We live in a paradigm that does not value human life as a whole, only those that can and are capable to contribute to this corrupt economy. Absolutely nothing will change until we are forced to live within our means on this planet. GIANT METEOR 2016!

  26. Great work fro Jordan. You folks should use him more for investigative journalism pieces, would be nice to see more of those.

  27. Sunflowers are being used to clean both Chernobyl and Fukashima. It's called phytoremediation. It takes a long time (years) but it's something that people can do (FYI: You have to dispose of the whole plant properly or you'll just wind up putting the heavy metals back in the soil). There are food plants that also uptake heavy metals in the soil like broccoli and cabbage, so this also hurts people who try to supplement their nutrition by growing their own food. :/

  28. Lovin' the spotlight on TYT Politics. This is for all the trollbags who question TYT's authenticity as a news source.
I hope to see more of the Live Show's stories lead off with Jordan's reporting.

  29. They are still dealing with lead in Flint. They are still drinking water polluted with lead in Flint. They are still bathing in water polluted by lead in Flint. They can't legally sell their homes and leave in Flint because of the lead.

  30. http://www.forbes.com/sites/alexknapp/2013/01/03/how-lead-caused-americas-violent-crime-epidemic/#4d2aede363b2

  31. trying to figure out who's putting lead in chemical chemicals,in the use of chemtrails spraying in the atmosphere?

  32. Gota love Corporate Capitalism, looking after the communities is their top priority (actually it is making money the workers do not matter).I wonder when the Americans that support this brutal system are going to realise that?

  33. There's another kind of airborne lead poisoning affecting Chicago residents as well. It moves faster and the particles are much larger.

  34. Whenever a story like this comes up, it's no surprise as to what the motivation was for the majority to do such foul things. It all ties in with the words of Lee Atwater:

"You start out in 1954 by saying, “Ni**er, ni**er, ni**er.” By 1968 you can’t say “ni**er”—that hurts you, backfires. So you say stuff like, uh, forced busing, states’ rights, and all that stuff, and you’re getting so abstract. Now, you’re talking about cutting taxes, and all these things you’re talking about are totally economic things and a byproduct of them is, blacks get hurt worse than whites.… “We want to cut this,” is much more abstract than even the busing thing, uh, and a hell of a lot more abstract than “Ni**er, ni**er.”

I bet the people were happy when the city wanted to build "Low Cost" housing for the poor. But then what race is most likely to be poor in this f**ked up country. If you're an Africam American, beware of gifts from conservatives.

  35. Loving the mention of the "theory" that lead caused the crime wave in America. The lead in gasoline caused so, so many problems. Please, PLEASE read this great article that summarizes the issue – http://www.motherjones.com/environment/2016/02/lead-exposure-gasoline-crime-increase-children-health

Cenk and Ana really should have put a little more emphasis on this.

  36. Public aid housing in black neighborhoods that have lead in the ground, water and air. Lead leads to violent behavior. Despite this fact, white people will continue to say it's because they're black. Because they love nothing more than shitting on minorities.

  37. This is so unexpected! Importing millions and millions of Third World people into the US should be ending all of this. I'm outraged! It's as if Mexicans and blacks living in a particular area will automatically result in lead poisoning and various other crises that result from seemingly irresponsible leadership and a lack of competent coordination, but are in fact part of a sinister conspiracy to kill colored people! It's not the black and Hispanic leadership! Oh no, get that out of your filthy mind this instant you white supremacist bigot! It's either a total coincidence or a full-fledge conspiracy against the brilliant darlings in the black and Hispanic underclass. We need more of them, not less!

  38. I bet you trolls think differently about Chicago now…don't you?
This proves again…issues/crime are based on ENVIRONMENT. Not the race of the people committing them

  39. BUT WAIT, THEIRS MORE!!!!
Obama wants to take in Refuges from the middle east and give them money rather then help people like this

  40. something is not right about this story.. i do not mean to be without concern for anyone who has been harmed by lead or any toxin. I must look for info of the number of persons who have lead poisoning in that community.
What triggered this testing for lead poisoning?
and you mention 'pence' .. interesting brief.

  41. certain groups. of people ( blacks ) whos footing the bill to clean this up working people buy their food pay their bills build and pay for up keep on their home pay for their kids pay their medical pay for them to have more kids and keep in mind generations of them doing this to working people something happens to us no one helps no one cares working man cant get everything paid for and keeps going backwards taking care of u know certain people who dont have to work

  42. Being from this city, the West Calumet complex has always been a section 8 dump. Getting rid of the trash. Go to South Chicago or Gary. Public housing should be only for veterans. Not welfare garbage.
