What Is Organic Food?

So you’re at the store and you’ree looking
for something quick and easy to eat, but you’re also trying to be health-conscious. So instead of the regular cheesy mac, you
go for the organic stuff. Instead of regular chicken nuggets, you
grab some organic chicken nuggets. Then, top it off with some organic sandwich
cookies. Hmm cookies! It’s all organic so it’s good for you, right? Well, not always. You see, while forty
five percent of americans think the organic label means healthy or good, organic really has nothing to do with
how nutritious the food is for you. Organic really just defines how the
ingredients were created, prepared, or raised. Let me explain. Organic means that there
aren’t any genetically modified ingredients. Also, organic means that no chemicals were
used to kill bugs and weeds. And that all pesticides are natural
instead of synthetic. And organic means nothing was fertilized with sewage sludge.
Yeah, sewage sludge. Organic also means that nothing was
exposed to radiation, which some manufactures use to sterilize food. and that no industrial solvents were used to
clean things up. Also, organic means there can be no chemical additives
that some foods have to make them stay fresh for an unnatural amount of time. And if it’s meats, that there’s no
routine use of antibiotics or hormones pumped into the animals. And all this
stuff is really important, but notice organic
doesn’t necessarily mean that the ingredients are nutritious. So if you care about healthy foods it’s more important to just eat the
whole foods, mostly fruits and vegetables and avoid packaged-like substances. And
yeah, that includes organic cheesy mac. And here’s a really big tip. If you can
pronounce all the ingredients in a package you’re holding then you’re on the right track. Hey, this is Jon from Epipheo. Subscribe yourself to the channel. You won’t regret it. Also we want to know in the comments what
foods do you think are important to buy organic. Which ones don’t really matter? We’d love to hear your thoughts on that. Also, next week we’re talking with an M.I.T. professor about how to lose weight. He uses math to study weight loss. It’s gonna be
something you never heard before. Stick around. Peace out.

  1. Where can you buy organic food if your local food store doesn't sell it? I mean are there any like online organic food, or maybe a rich organic farmer some where?

  2. everybody should do their own research before tuning in to any youtube video to tell you how its done.
Why dont you compare the agricultural methods and compare organic vs non-organic means. That should answer peoples questions.

  3. "If you can pronounce all the ingredients in the package you're holding you're on the right track." I'm a chemist, fuck me right?

  4. Ideally, this is what organic should mean in America. But, since the word "natural" is not regulated, we should all be careful. That is why the last tip you gave is essentially a good way to shop.

  5. Interesting how the word "organic" even exists. Since food itself is always organic. The fake food-like products have somehow earned the term "food" while real food has to be labeled "organic food". Smartest species on the planet, yet we're controlled by something we made up. Money… dictates how we care for ourselves as a species and also what we ingest.

  6. It might be organic yogurt that is important really because if you think about it, the ingredients in organic yogurt are all organic like the milk the strawberries and other.

  7. Organic food, in the past couple years, has been labeled as automatically better.  People seem to associate organic as some mystical blessing that will make you healthier by just eating it.  This video hit all the key points on how the majority of the population just thinks that organic food is better.  Organic foods are better in the sense that the farming that goes into it is less detrimental for the Earth.  That in return is seen in the price and cost of maintaining an organic farm.

  8. "Organic" is a made-up, unscientific label which has no link to the scientific definition of an "organic" compound, which is any which contains carbon-hydrogen or carbon-carbon bonds. This applies to the overwhelming majority of carbon compounds as well as pretty much everything and anything of biological origin

  9. Awesome for every who like organic and healthy lifestyle! 🙂

  10. Organic food would actually be healthier for you, but in a more indirect way. The hormones/pesticides that non-organic companies use have been, in some case, proven to cause health effects on both the consumer and the environment. This includes liver damage, reproductive issues, etc. However, companies that just label 'natural', or 'wholesome', or other claims that are not backed up by official labels are NOT the same as organic,, and can mean squat in a lot of cases. Correct me if I am wrong, this is what I. Have spent a long time reading about.

  11. "organic" does use chemical pesticides, they're just chemicals that have been in use a long time, like copper sulfate, rotenone, etc.
Many of these "organic" chemicals are actually more toxic than their newer, "synthetic" counterparts.

  12. Organic highly processed food is still highly processed food. If you want cookies, buy the organic, pasture-raised raw ingredients and learn to bake.

  13. Can someone explain, why all this is called "ORGANIC" food instead of, say, "natural" food? Organis means made out of organic compound. In this regards it doesn't matter how the food was produced it will be in any case organic, just because human can consume and digest it. It just doesn't make sense.
Or it is just playing on that stupid stereotype of "organic means good, friendly and safe, and chemical with synthetic means horrible poisonous stuff that will kill you and dissolve your body, or made you very sick at the very least"?

  14. NOT all people can afford Non GMO or /& Organic food as it is more xpensive than conventional ones., so  does it mean that vegan Non GMO & non organic food consummer will die sooner with cancer , MS, etc ? ? I hate organic food propaganda, it is UNFAIR for those who can not afford it .
SO what for being vegan then ??? ….
What left to eat for the marginal vegan consummer ???.

  15. I think i buy organic food like vegetables and fruit. But do i really know that the food i buy is actually organic? Are this company's not just given life to a new brand?

  16. Organic food is INDUSTRY. They want to sell people product = make money.

Good diet: veggies, fruits, whole grains, meat and fish, milk products (kefir, yogurt, cheese etc.).

Simply do not buy highly processed foods, there is no difference between organic, non gluten COOKIE vs. regular. Organic or gluten free can be even more stuffed with refined SUGARS etc. All pesticides, fertilizers etc. used in conventional production are actually used so plants HAVE good nutritional value.

  17. Hey we all poop you, me, your dog, ever one and it all brakes down a plant does not care it's all food to it.

  18. If you can pronounce all the ingredients on the label, it doesn't always mean you are on the right track. Maybe, you are just really good at pronouncing stuff?

  19. Please help me complete this 10 questions survey about organic food (Final year report) which will take less than 5 minutes of your precious time: http://enterprise.questionpro.com/t/ALzvUZTbNc
    THANK YOU~

  20. I particularly don't like how organic proponents seem to have taken over the entire gardening community on the internet, such that I can't find any rational explanation of what the alternative is to an "organic" garden and why these lowly "non-organic" practices would be inferior.

  21. 1. The majority of what was stated about organic foods isn't true. Organic foods do use the same pesticides and when they do use "natural" alternative they're worse than their standard counterpart, they are bleached, and are filled with preservatives on a regular basis (same rule for both, packaged = preservatives, non-packaged = no preservatives). Organic =X= Natural, nothing is more or less natural than anything else.

    2. Your (or anyone's) ability to pronounce the name of an ingredient has absolutely nothing to do with nutrition, and is counterproductive.

  22. we should call organic food just normal food and have non organic food have a name cause if I say I eat organic. people will go oh well I just eat normal food.. like dafu do you even try to look what's in your food like do you even care. kids are now growing up on gmo foods and will have kids and gmo effects the reproductive system and its a more chance of the child have a disorder or disease or have 2 heads. I see people try to eat healthy and they buy non organic lettuce or spinich and might as well go drink your own garden sprays.

  23. I eat hole food and i make sure they are organic. Organic fruits taste better than none organic.

  24. or you raise your own animals cattle etc if you could and bam as healthy as it gets without going back about 600+ years

  25. Its basically unprocessed food that will probably go bad faster. Buy as you eat so you dont waste food if you are into the organic type

  26. I hate how people relate ALL modified food as bad… I mean yes most modified and not natural food is bad. But that doesn't mean that all of it is bad.

  27. I dont know about the American organic industry but european and especially Ireland have strict laws to abide by especially in the dairy sector where all grazing platforms are natural and no chemichal fertilizers are used. All cows are given anti-biotics only in emergencys and not for simple sicknesses

  28. All of them. They all matter. So many foods are getting sprayed with toxic chemicals including Glyphosate as a drying agent, that really everyone should only be eating organic.

  29. Even if the processed organic foods you buy aren’t actually nutritionally valuable (because organic junk food is still junk food), by buying organic you are helping PROTECT large amounts of LAND by keeping the earth and surrounding water systems free of chemicals. So yes, BUY THE ORGANIC MAC AND CHEESE. It's still better than the regular!

ALSO, organic produce has been shown to have vastly HIGHER LEVELS OF NUTRIENTS. This article explains why and links to some studies:
    https://www.npr.org/sections/thesalt/2016/02/18/467136329/is-organic-more-nutritious-new-study-adds-to-the-evidence

  30. Organic food is BULL SHIT! I have never tasted food so bad, as the food at my old organic college. Organic enthusiasts are aggressively snobby and in your face and bitchy. SCREW organic shite, I LOVE Monsanto.

  31. You screwed up the part about the fertilizer. Organic produce is raised using animal waste as fertilizer and is often the source of food borne illnesses. Non-Organic produce uses chemical based fertilizers such as Potash, Urea, Phosphate just to name a few.

  32. It is amusing that the pesticides conventional farmers use are organic molecules that degrade fairly quickly, but many pesticides used by organic farmers (iron sulfate, copper sulfate, manganese sulfate) are inorganic molecules and could be in the environment for years. (But don’t worry, they won’t harm you. Unlike organic fanatics, I’ll be honest about the real risks involved.) I believe that organic crop production rules also allow the use of nicotine-insecticides, which are organic molecules. That's like forcing cute innocent insects to smoke
    cigarettes.

  33. The one bad thing I know that is not prohibited in organic products is fluoride. Oh, and also manure that is used to fertilize certified organic crops does not have to come from cows not given drugs and not fed non-organic feed. Poultry litter is the same; it can come from conventionally-raised birds given ARSENIC. Somebody needs to have a talk with the NOSB about this. I have seen many “organic and natural” bags of OMRI-listed soil that has this stuff in it. I understand that the meat of these animals may be “GRAS” or whatever because of the relatively low amount of bad stuff in it because 85 percent comes out in their poop… BUT IF FREAKING 85 PERCENT COMES OUT IN THEIR POOP, THEN SHOULD VEGETABLES FERTILIZED WITH THIS CR*P BE “GENERALLY RECOGNIZED AS SAFE”?!!!?

  34. What other kind of food is there, mechanical food? All food is organic. Pesticides and fertilizers do not change the nature of food. Even if the seed that was used to grow the food had been genetically modified, it is still by nature, organic. The word "organic" has been re-defined by marketing "geniuses" to make people think it means something other than what it truly means. It is what the marketers term a "buzzword". They rely on the proven and obvious ignorance of the common consumer to sell them something for more than it is worth.

  35. Organic does not mean that
Necessarily ! Organic is anything with a carbon trace… hence organic salt is impossible.. but they market it!!!

  36. You have some good points (eat more fruits and veggies!) and some REALLY incorrect info. As an example, first you say "no" chemicals are used on organic, then you say the chemicals used are "natural". Which is it?? Secondly, why the fear-inducing graphics and language? Synthetic chemicals are skull-and-crossbones, while "natural" pesticides are green hearts??? That's not at all accurate! Some of the MOST toxic pesticides are "natural". Next, you forgot to mention that organic farmers use ANIMAL poop. What's so bad about people poop, when animal poop is ok?? Or was it really that you just wanted to paint Organic in a glowing light, regardless of facts?!? I could go on, but I'll stop now. And lastly, eat more fruits and veggies!

  37. arrrr….too good.
